One Too Many Cups Of Coffee?

by John

This happened to me several weeks ago actually. Hopefully I can recall all the details of the situation, so I can give an accurate representation of what occurred.

After having my morning cup of coffee and kissing the little lady goodbye, I was out the door and on my way to the office. Actually excited for the day to begin… no seriously, I mean it! Hahaha.

Anyways, in line at the stop sign just a few minutes up the road from my home I happened to notice the guy in line behind me. He was texting away on his phone, and looked to be sipping a cup of java or the like.

What made me notice him, was the fact that he was lagging behind me considerable as each car stopped and moved on at the stop sign. He would look up and jam his accelerator in order to catch up each time he realized that he was late in moving up.

Finally my turn to go came and I proceeded to look both ways and start to pull out in the the road. Fortunately, I learned a long time ago to double check before I fully commit to the movement and sure enough, a sporty sedan had just rounded the bend and was barreling toward me at full speed.

I immediately punched my brakes and cursed under my breath, happy that I was able to stop in time before my fate was sealed by the oncoming piece of German engineering. At that instant, I was jolted by a severe bump from behind…. You guessed it, the text messaging dolt with the cup of coffee had decided to pull up without making sure I pulled out!

I immediately got out of my car to examine the damage, and to my surprise the guy was already out of his car and started screaming at me at the top of his lungs. I won’t repeat the language he was using, but let me tell you this guy must have been a sailor in his younger days. What a mouth.

I delicately tried to explain to him what had occurred without laying the blame on him (where it belonged), but to no avail. He kept screaming at me, even though another person behind him was kind enough to jump out and mediate. Even when the police came (I called them), the guy still wouldn’t calm down and couldn’t believe it when the officer gave him a ticket for following too close!

Response from Dr. DeFoore

I appreciate the light and humorous mood of this story! The guy got his consequences, and all ended well. It isn't always that way with road rage, but the light-hearted story with a happy ending is refreshing.

Texting and caffeine can certainly add up to a safety hazard on the road!

Thanks, John!

My best to you,

Dr. DeFoore
