I am 32 years old and got into trouble with law all because of my anger. I was hiding my anger with alcohol until I blew up one day on my husband. I would love to learn how to manage my anger a lot better. How do I go about learning how to manage?
Response from Dr. DeFoore
Hi Tammy. Thanks for writing on this site, so that others can benefit from what you've written, and my response. It sounds like you are serious about helping yourself--and that is very good. You want to get better because you are a good person--and you are the only person who can do the necessary work to get better and manage your anger.
Here's what I suggest:
1) You have to stop drinking if you expect to manage your anger. You can't do effective anger management and continue to drink excessively. Consider joining Alcoholics Anonymous to help you with this.
2) Practice anger management techniques again and again, until you can do all of them consistently. Just click "Techniques" on the left side of this page.
3) Sign up for our free Healing Anger newsletter, and receive a free Anger Management Techniques Ebook when you do. Read the Ebook thoroughly, and read all of the back issues of the newsletter.
4) Consider buying some of our books and CDs, which will give you great information and guidance about how to manage your anger on your own and in relationships.
If you do all of these things without fail, you will succeed! And you will be much happier, because you will be acting like the good person you really are.
My best to you, Tammy,
Dr. DeFoore
