Do You Have PTSD?


Think about the words...post traumatic stress disorder. Let's look at what those words mean:

  • Post means after--could be days after or many years after. So, just because your trauma was a long time ago...or if it wasn't that long ago, it can still cause ptsd.
  • Traumatic means shocking, terrifying, debilitating, shattering pain and fear. So, with the words "post traumatic," we've got "after major shock, pain and fear."
  • Stress refers to what is going on in your body and mind. This is where you get the ptsd symptoms of: heart racing, sweating, anxiety, catastrophic thinking, racing thoughts, paranoid thought patterns, sleep problems, rage and anger disorders.
  • Disorder means that those stress symptoms are happening too much, and interfering with your normal functioning. Everybody experiences stress, but post traumatic stress disorder is not normal stress, because it is tied in with specific past events.

So, you have ptsd if you are experiencing a combination of those stress symptoms on a recurring basis following a traumatic experience in your past.

I wouldn't worry too much about the diagnosis, however. Our purpose here is to help you do something about it. 

How Do You Treat PTSD Symptoms?

This is not a medical site, so we're not going to recommend any medications here. If that's what you're looking for, you'll have no problem finding that information on the Internet.

Okay, you're still here...that means you're willing to do something besides taking medication for your ptsd symptoms.

Here are some things you can do to start your healing process right now:

  • First, and maybe most important of all, start writing. Research by Dr. James Pennebaker and others has shown that simply writing about past traumatic experience can relieve stress and related symptoms of ptsd. Here are some guidelines for therapeutic journaling that will help you get started.
  • You can also address your anxiety directly by following the guidelines on this page about anxiety symptoms.
  • If anger is your main ptsd symptom, please examine your different options for understanding and healing your anger once and for all, in this article.
  • Another condition that can result from ptsd is depression. Depression results from holding pain, fear and anger inside for too long. Take the depression test to get started.
